You want to ride! Motorcycle Safety Foundation
Guide to Ride — Get Started
All residents operating a motorcycle in New Jersey must have a motorcycle endorsement on their existing driver license or a separate motorcycle license. A motorcycle permit is required before obtaining the endorsement or motorcycle license.
How to get a motorcycle permit
You must be at least 17 years old
Complete a motorcycle permit application from an MVC Agency
Pass the 6 Point ID Verification
Pay $5 permit fee. For your convenience, MVC Agencies accept American Express® card, MasterCard® card, Visa® card, checks, money orders and cash
Pass the knowledge and vision tests to validate your permit. Study by reading the Driver Manual and Motorcycle Manual [524k pdf]
Practicing with your permit
You must be accompanied by a New Jersey licensed motorcyclist on a separate motorcycle to practice, and must practice with a permit for at least 20 days before being eligible to take the road test.
How to get a motorcycle license
Go to the Driver Testing Center at the scheduled date and time with a registered, insured motorcycle to take the road test
If you pass the road test, you can take your permit, ride slip and score sheet to an MVC Agency to receive your license
Pay $24 license fee
To qualify for a motorcycle license without taking the road test you may:
Take an approved Motorcycle Safety Education Program and provide the Driver Testing Center with proof that you successfully completed the course
After successful completion of one of these courses, provide the Driver Testing Center with:
6 Point ID Verification
Most Waiver Certification Form
Your stamped permit
Motorcycle Safety Foundation Completion Card
Possible reasons you can fail the road test

Locations
With over 1500 RiderCourse
sites throughout the United States, there’s probably one near you.
Some points to consider when selecting a Training Site:
- The MSF Basic RiderCourse is designed as a 15-hour curriculum that takes place over a few days or consecutive weekends. However, some locations listed here add additional modules of instruction/discussion that lengthen the class.
- Most locations issue an MSF RiderCourse Completion Card. Upon successful completion of the RiderCourse, some states, not all, will waive the on-bike riding skills test and/or the written test required to obtain your motorcycle operator’s license or endorsement.
- Please note that many states will not accept an MSF RiderCourse Completion Card issued from another state or from the Military.
Be sure to ask the Training Site you’ve selected about these details before you enroll in a RiderCourse.
